Royal Guests and Relatives gathered from around Europe to celebrate the 70th Birthday of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, where King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia held a Banquet for Royal Guests and Dignitaries in the Hall of State.

On the eve of the King’s 70th Birthday, several of the Foreign Royal Guests joined the Swedish Royal Family for a Concert at the Nordic Museum in Stockholm, at the end of which the King gave a speech:
What an extraordinary concert we have got to be involved tonight! It is hard to imagine a more beautiful prelude to this evening. […] On the eve of my 70th birthday, it feels useful to gather representatives of both Swedish society and the Swedish people. It is an occasion to look back but also to look ahead. And above all, to say: Thank you!”
The following day, the Swedish Royal Family and Royal Guests attended a Te Deum Service and Armed Forces celebration at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, and, following a carriage ride through the streets of Stockholm, a Lunch at Stockholm City Hall.

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden celebrated the evening of his 70th Birthday in true Royal style with a Banquet in the Hall of State at the Royal Palace of Stockholm. After a busy day attending a Te Deum service, Armed Forces celebration, and a Lunch at Stockholm City Hall, the Royal family, as well as representatives of other countries, donned their finest clothes to attend the private dinner. The guests were photographed while going to the Banquet, though there are no picture of the actual meal. The dresscode was Black tie, but most of the Royal ladies wore Tiaras.

Queen Silvia red (orange?) lace gown with the Connaught Tiara, floral earrings, diamond riviére with diamond drop, and a diamond bracelet. The Queen carried a bag, a gift from Princess Margaretha, who embroidered it, that is almost 40 years old.

Crown Princess Victoria wore the Boucheron Laurel Wreath Tiara, best remembered on the late Princess Lilian, the King’s Great-Aunt, who bequeathed the Tiara to Victoria in 2013. She also wore diamond earrings, diamond riviére necklace, and a new pink lace dress by Elie Saab. She arrived with Prince Daniel, her husband, and Prince Carl-Phillip, her brother. Prince Carl-Philip’s wife Princess Sofia, who attended events earlier in the day, returned home to look after their week old son.

Princess Madeleine wore another Elie Saab gown, repeated from her own pre-wedding celebrations. She wore her Modern Fringe Tiara, and a pair of diamond epaulette earrings worn by Crown Princess Victoria to her pre-wedding events. SHe also wore Princess Lilian’s Diamond zigzag bracelet.Princess Madeleine was accompanied by her husband Chris O’Neill.

The King’s eldest sister Princess Margaretha, Mrs Ambler, wore a grey satin dress with a lace coat, along with her Aquamarine kokoshnik Tiara. The King’s youngest sister wore a blue lace gown along with the Aquamarine Bandeau Tiara belonging to Princess Madeleine.
The King’s other two sisters Princess Birgitta and Princess Désirée wore white gowns. Recently widowed Princess Birgitta wore the Baden Fringe Tiara with diamond earrings. Princess Désirée wore her own, Queen Louise’s, Tiara with large diamond earrings, and a diamond riviére.

Queen Margrethe wore a frequently repeated blue gown, with the Baden Palmette Tiara, diamond riviére, and square diamond brooches that were made for Queen Josefina of Sweden in the 1840s. Most of her jewelry has Swedish provenance. She was escorted by the Birthday boy, King Carl XVI Gustaf, her cousin.

Crown Princess Mary wore a floral dress with a floral hair piece and earrings by Danish jeweller Ole Lynggaard. The Queen’s sister Princess Benedikte, Princess of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg, also attended the birthday celebration of her cousin. She wore more pieces of Swedish provenance with her pink gown; Queen Sophia’s Star and Pearl Tiara, inherited from her mother, Queen Ingrid (born Princess of Sweden), pearl earrings, and a pearl necklace with diamond stars. A notable absence was Queen Anne Marie of Greece, the sister of Queen Margrethe and Princess Benedikte.

The King, Queen, Crown prince and Crown Princess didn’t attend the Birthday events because of a helicopter crash in Norway. Princess Martha Louise and her husband Ari Behn represented the Norwegian Royal family at the event. She wore a one-shoulder abstract pattern gown with her Tiara, an 18th Birthday Gift from her grandfather King Olav V.
Belgium

King Philippe and Queen Mathilde officially represented Belgium at the Banquet, however their are family ties, since King Philippe’s Grandmother, Queen Astrid, was born a Princess of Sweden. Queen Mathilde wore one-shoulder mauve gown, with the Wolfers Necklace Tiara, inherited from the king’s aunt the late Queen Fabiola in 2014, and a pair of diamond earrings.
The Netherlands

Princess Beatrix, the Former Queen of the Netherlands, represented her son at the Banquet. She wore the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara and pearl jewels with her paisley gown. She was escorted by Prince Albert II of Monaco.
Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein was represented by Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie. She wore a silk and lace gown with the Habsburg Fringe Tiara.

Princess Takamado of Japan represented the Japanese Imperial family. She wore a diamond laurel leaf tiara, and a large diamond necklace with her green gown. She was escorted by King Philippe of Belgium.
Romania
Crown Princess Margarita and Prince Radu represented the former royal family of Romania. She wore a red gown with black lace, with the Romanian Greek Key Tiara and a diamond demi-parure.
Serbia

Bavaria

Princess Ursula of Bavaria wore a small diamond scroll tiara, since the family has sold their Sunburst Tiara. Her daughter-in-law, Princess Anna wore the tiara from her own family; the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg’s. Princess Elisabeth of Bavaria wore her Douglas Floral Tiara. She is the mother of Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein.
Saxe-Coburg-Gotha
The Swedish Royal family maintain close ties with the former Royal house of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, because the King Carl Gustaf’s mother was born a Princess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. Hereditary Princess Kelly wore the family’s Turquoise tiara and necklace, which had been worn by the then Grand Duchess of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha at the pre-wedding ball of the King’s parents in 1932.
In a group photo released by the Royal Court, you can see the other guests including the Tsar and Tsaritsa of Bulgaria, The Presidents of Iceland and Finland, as well as the in-laws of the KIng’s children.
