Douglas Floral Tiara

Happy 30th Anniversary to Hereditary Prince Alois and Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein, who got married on this day in 1993! The Bavarian Duchess wore a Swedish Aristocratic Heirloom to marry the Heir to the small Alpine Principality, which we are featuring today!

Composed of diamond daisies surrounded by diamond berries and leaves, the Tiara was made by an unidentified French Jeweller at some point in the nineteenth century, originating from the Swedish-German branch of Clan Douglas, currently owned by Princess Elisabeth, Duchess in Bavaria, who was born Countess Elisabeth Douglas in Sweden.

The Tiara no doubt originates from the Douglas Family as it was worn by Countess Ottora Douglas, the mother of the Duchess in Bavaria, for the Wedding Ball of Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein and her granddaughter, Duchess Sophie in Bavaria, at Schloss Nymphenburg 1993.

The Tiara had already been worn by  Duchess Marie-Caroline in Bavaria, the younger sister of Hereditary Princess Sophie, fro her Wedding to Duke Philipp of Württemberg in 1991.

In 1993, the Douglas Floral Tiara was famously worn by Duchess Sophie in Bavaria to marry Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein in Vaduz on this day 30 years ago.

After Countess Ottora’s death in 2001, the Douglas Floral Tiara was inherited by her daughter, Princess Elisabeth, Duchess in Bavaria, who wore the tiara for the Wedding of Prince Manuel of Bavaria and Princess Anna of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg in 2005 and also wore the piece as a massive corsage at the Wedding of the Prince of Prussia and Princess Sophie of Isenburg in 2011.

In 2004, the Tiara was worn by Duchess Elisabeth, the fourth daughter of the Duke and Duchess in Bavaria, for her wedding to Daniel Terberger.

The Douglas Floral Tiara was also worn by Duchess Maria Ana, the younger daughter, for her first marriage, to Klaus Runow, in 2007.

The Douglas Floral Tiara has also been worn by Countess Rosita Douglas-Stjernorp, the former Duchess of Marlborough and sister of the Duchess in Bavaria, following her divorce.

Princess Elisabeth, the Duchess in Bavaria has made the Douglas Floral Tiara her primary jewel in recently years, in contrast to the heirloom Bavarian Royal Tiaras, wearing it for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 70th Birthday in 2016, and also the Wedding Ball of her granddaughter, Duchess Sophie of Württemberg, in 2018.

Most recently, the Douglas Floral Tiara was worn by Duchess Marie-Caroline in Bavaria, Duchess Philipp of Württemberg for the Wedding Ball of Prince Ludwig of Bavaria at Schloss Schleißheim in May. There is no doubt we will continue to see this spectacular Heirloom for years to come!
