Princess Sofia’s Wedding Tiara

Happy Birthday to Princess Sofia of Sweden, Duchess of Värmland who turns 38th Birthday! The accomplished former model who is the only daughter-in-law of King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia, Princess Sofia has worn several splendid heirlooms from the Swedish Royal Collection, but her primary jewel is her spectacular Wedding Tiara!

When Prince Carl Philip of Sweden married Sofia Hellqvist in 2015, she received a splendid wedding gift from King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden: A Diamond Palmette Tiara topped with pear-shaped Emeralds, which was reportedly a gift to Queen Silvia from a Thai Prince and converted from a necklace into a tiara in Thailand, according to Svensk Damtidning.

After wearing the Tiara on her Wedding Day, Princess Sofia wore it for the Nobel Prize Ceremony later that year, and also at the King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates the following day, all in the original version with a rigid frame.

By the following year, the Tiara had been sent for alterations, so Princess Sofia wore the Cut Steel Bandeau, Four-Button Tiara, Napoleonic Amethyst Tiara, and Six-Button Tiara in quick succession until the Representationsmiddag at the Royal Palace of Stockholm in 2017, when a new version of the Palmette Tiara was debuted, this time without the emeralds, while the following month, the Tiara was topped with pearls for the Nobel Prize Ceremony, and worn with emerald at the following day’s King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates, all in a more open and less rigid frame.

The following year, the pearl version of the Tiara was worn for the Icelandic State Visit to Sweden, while the diamond version was worn for Representationsmiddag and the Italian State Visit to Sweden, before pearls were worn by Princess Sofia for the Nobel Prize Ceremony, and detached the next day at the King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates.

In 2019, pearls were worn for the South Korean State Visit to Sweden, emeralds for Representationsmiddag, but for the Nobel Prize Ceremony, Princess Sofia debuted a new version of the Tiara, with turquoises, though they were detached at the King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates the following day.

Princess Sofia volunteered at a hospital during the Pandemic and thus did not get a chance to wear her tiara again until the Spanish State Visit to Sweden last year, when the pearl version of the Tiara was worn, while only the Diamonds were worn for the New Portraits of the Swedish Royal Family.

Also this year, Princess Sofia wore the Emerald Version of the Tiara for the Representationsmiddag at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, while the Pearls were worn for the Finnish State Visit to Sweden and the Representationsmiddag at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, and the emeralds returned for the Dutch State Visit to Sweden. There will be more appearances at the Nobel Prize Ceremony and the King’s Dinner in the coming few days but there is no doubt we will continuing to see this versatile Tiara for years to come!

  1. Given the relatively modest size of the alternate toppers the options for this tiara are exciting. I would love to see it topped with black pearls or opals
