King Harald and Queen Sonja’s Silver Wedding Anniversary, 1993

Over Forty Royal Guests and Relatives from around Europe joined the Norwegian Royal Family for King Harald V and Queen Sonjas spectacular Silver Wedding Anniversary Celebrations in Oslo on this day in 1993, 30 years ago, followed by a 3-Day Cruise around north-western Norway.

The Silver Wedding celebrations began with a spectacular Banquet hosted by King Harald V and Queen Sonja (wearing the Queen Josefina’s Diamond Tiara and Queen Alexandra’s Diamond Chandelier Earrings) at the Royal Palace of Oslo, which was followed by a spectacular Bal Polonaise with all the Royal Guests. The King and Queen were joined by Crown Prince Haakon and Princess Märtha Louise (in the King Olav’s Gift Tiara).

Princess Désirée (wearing Queen Louise’s Diamond Tiara) and Princess Christina (in her Pearl and Diamond Tiara), Prince Carl and Princess Kristine Bernadotte, Count Axel and Countess Ruth of Rosenborg (wearing Princess Ingeborg’s Turquoise Star Tiara), Countess Madeleine Kogevinas (in her Tiara) and Lady Elizabeth Anson (wearing Princess Viggo’s Diamond Scroll Tiara).

The following morning, the Norwegian Royal Family were joined by the Royal Guests for a Service of Thanksgiving at Oslo Cathedral ahead of an appearance on the Balcony of the Royal Palace of Oslo and a luncheon at the Oscarshall Palace.

In the evening, some of the Royal Guests attended a Banquet hosted for King Harald V and Queen Sonja (in the Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara) by the Norwegian Government at the Akershus Fortress in Oslo, with the guests including Queen Margrethe II (wearing the Floral Aigrette Tiara) and Prince Henrik, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia (in the Cameo Tiara), Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands (wearing the Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara), King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain (in the Cartier Pearl Tiara), King Constantine II and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece (likely wearing the Greek Emerald Parure), and Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte of Luxembourg. Many of the younger guests attended a separate Gala Dinner in Oslo.

After the festivities in Oslo, the Norwegian Royal Family and many of the Royal Guests went on a 3-Day Cruise on the Royal Yacht Norge and Danish Royal Yacht Dannebrog through Nordfjord and Sunnmoere in the north-western part of Norway.

  1. It must have been a real challenge to pack for this trip! Everyone looks like they had a wonderful time. I love the way the generations mixed, and there was something for all to enjoy!
