King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden

Happy Birthday to King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, who turns 71 today. The only son of Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden, Duke of Västerbotten and Princess Sibylla of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, he is the younger brother of the four ‘Haga Princesses‘, and became 2nd in-line to the Swedish Throne after his father died when he was seven-months old. In 1950, he became the heir to the throne, after the death of his great-grandfather, and accession of his grandfather, Gustaf VI Adolf. Educated in Sweden, he served in the Swedish Army, Navy and Air Force, and at various Swedish Embassies around the world. In 1973, he acceded to the throne as King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. In 1976, he married Brazilian-German Silvia Sommerlath. The couple have three children, Crown Princess Victoria, Prince Carl-Phillip, and Princess Madeleine, and almost six grandchildren. King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia reside at Drottningholm Palace, while their official offices remain at Royal Palace of Stockholm.
