Princess Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh arrived in the Province of British Colombia during their extensive Tour of Canada on this day in 1951, different phases of which we are individually covering over the next few weeks. Following a busy Summer, with the Opening of the Festival of Britain, the Danish State Visit, the Norwegian State Visit, the Tour of Canada was the first sign of Princess Elizabeth and the Duke, who had given up his Naval Careerbecoming full-time working Royals in the last few months of King George VI’s life, ahead of her Accession to the Throne.  Continue reading

Wedding of Princess Mako

Princess Mako of Akishino, the eldest daughter of Crown Prince Akishino and Crown Princess Kiko, married Kei Komuro with an official from the Imperial Household Agency registering the marriage on their behalf with the municipal government, followed by a Press Conference at a Hotel in Tokyo on October 26th. The Wedding took place without without any associated Imperial rites, due to the controversy of the match, and Princess Mako was seen off by her parents and younger sister Princess Kako as she departed Tōgū Palace, leaving behind her title and all vestiges of her Imperial life, and becoming Mrs Mako Komuro. Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna’s Diamond Necklace

Today marks the 70th Anniversary of the Death of Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna of Russia, Princess of Leiningen, who died on this day in 1951! The elder daughter of Grand Duke Kirill Vladimirovich of Russia and Princess Victoria Melita of Saxe-Coburg und Gotha, Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna was the sister of Grand Duke Vladimir and Grand Duchess Kira, Princess of Prussia, growing up in exile in France and Germany before she married the 6th Prince of Leiningen in 1925. The Prince and Princess of Leiningen had seven children, including Prince Karl of Leiningen and Princess Margarita of Hohenzollern, and remained married until his death in a Russian Concentration Camp in 1946, with the Grand Duchess passing away in 1951. Portuguese Emerald Tiara

Today marks the 70th Anniversary of the Death of Queen Amélie of Portugal, who died on this day in 1951! The eldest daughter of Prince Philippe, Count of Paris and Infanta Marie Isabelle of Spain, Amélie was born in London, where her family was living in exile. In 1886, she married Dom Carlos, Prince Royal of Portugal. The couple had three children, Prince Luís Filipe, Infanta Maria Ana (who died right after birth), and Infante Manuel, succeeding to the throne in 1889. In 1908, the King and his heir, Luis Filipe, were assassinated at Terreiro do Paço square, which led to the accession of her younger son as King. Manuel II reigned for two years before the monarchy was abolished. Amélie lived the rest of her life in exile in Versailles, France. She outlived her son, who had no descendants.
