Wedding of Princess Marie Louise of Bulgaria and Prince Karl of Leiningen, 1957

The Wedding of Princess Marie Louise of Bulgaria (wearing the Köchert Tiara), the only daughter of Tsar Boris III of Bulgaria and Princess Giovanna of Italy, and the sister of Tsar Simeon II, and Prince Karl of Leiningen, second son of the 6th Prince of Leiningen and Grand Duchess Maria Kirillovna of Russia, in a Bulgarian Orthodox Ceremony in Cannes on this day in 1957, following a civil ceremony on February 14th in Amorbach.  The couple later moved to Canada and had two sons, Prince Boris of Leiningen and Prince Hermann Friedrich of Leiningen, before divorcing in 1968. Princess Marie Louise remarried and had two further children, and is now known as the ‘Princess of Koháry’.

Royal Guests and Relatives in attendance included Tsar Simeon II of Bulgaria (brother), Queen Giovanna of Bulgaria (mother), King Umberto of Italy (uncle), King Farouk of Egypt, Queen Alexandra of Yugoslavia, the Countess of Paris, and Princess Anne, Duchess of Aosta among a host of royals and nobles from around Europe.

  1. Nice photos. Princess Marie Louise is princess Kohary as head of the so called Kohary branch of the Saxe-Coburg family, but is still and foremost Princess of Bulgaria. She is still very involved with the country and the American University – who just issued an annual prize/medal in her name.
