King George VI and Queen Elizabeth (wearing her Maple Leaf Brooch) were joined by Princess Elizabeth (wearing her Sapphire Chrysanthemum Brooch), the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Margaret, Prince Charles, and Princess Anne for a Holiday at Balmoral Castle on this day in 1951, which was the last summer holiday of the terminally-ill King’s life, just a few months before his death. The Duke of Edinburgh had just given up his Naval Career, and, with Princess Elizabeth, became full-time working Royals as they began the next phase of their Royal Life.

The Royal Family had quite a busy Summer, with the Opening of the Festival of Britain, the Danish State Visit, and the Norwegian State Visit.
