Princess Soraya of Iran

Princess Soraya of Iran was born on this day in 1932. Born Soraya Esfandiary-Bakhtiary to an Iranian Nobleman and his German wife, she was raised in Berlin and Isfahan, and educated in London and Switzerland. In 1951, she married the Shah of Iran, as his second wife, at the Marble Palace in Tehran. The Shah and Queen Soraya had a happy marriage, but had to divorce in 1955, due to the lack of an heir. The demoted Princess Soraya had a brief career as an actress, never remarried, and resided in luxury Europe where she was known as the ‘Princess with the sad eyes’. She passed away in Paris in 2001.
