Queen Charlotte of Württemberg’s Diamond Tiara

Last week, Duchess Sophie-Dorothée of Württemberg wore the heirloom Diamond Tiara from the last Queen of Württemberg to marry Philipp Polack in Altshausen, which is not the usual Württemberg Bridal Diadem but has been worn by several Brides of the House of Württemberg.

The exact origin of this piece is unknown but it seems to have been an old Diamond Necklace composed of rose-cut Diamonds which seems to have been worn as a Tiara since at least the 1890s.

Queen Charlotte of Württemberg wore the Diamond Tiara for a series of portraits in 1892, the year after the King’s accession to the Throne, which were often reproduced.

Queen Charlotte retained this Diamond Tiara after the fall of the Württemberg Monarchy, and while the other Tiaras are currently on display at the Old Castle in Stuttgart, this Tiara was inherited by the Dukes of Württemberg.

Duchess Elisabeth of Württemberg, daughter of the Duke of Württemberg and Archduchess Rosa of Austria-Tuscany, wore Queen Charlotte’s Diamond Tiara for her Wedding Ball with Prince Antoine of Bourbon-Two Sicilies at Schloss Altshausen in 1958.

Queen Charlotte’s Diamond Tiara was also worn by Duchess Elisabeth for the Wedding Ball of her brother, Duke Carl of Württemberg, and Princess Diane of Orléans at Schloss Altshausen in 1960.

A few years later, Duchess Elisabeth wore Queen Charlotte’s Diamond Tiara at the Wedding Ball of Prince Juan Carlos of Spain and Princess Sophia of Greece in 1962.

In 1988, Duchess Mathilde of Württemberg, daughter of the Duke of Württemberg and Princess Diane of Orléans, wore Queen Charlotte’s Diamond Tiara when she married Hereditary Count Erich of Waldburg zu Zeil and Trauchburg at Schloss Altshausen.

Queen Charlotte’s Diamond Tiara was worn by Dowager Hereditary Duchess Marie for the Ball after the Wedding of Duchess Sophie of Württemberg and Count Maximilien d’Andigné at Schloss Tegernsee in 2018.

Duchess Amelie of Württemberg wore Queen Charlotte’s Diamond Tiara for the Ball at Schloss Altshausen following her Wedding to Baron Franz-Ferdinand von Feilitzsch in Altshausen in 2023, at which she wore the Württemberg Diamond Tiara.

Now, most recently, Duchess Sophie-Dorothée of Württemberg wore Queen Charlotte’s Diamond Tiara to marry Philipp Polack in Altshausen last weekend, and there is no doubt we will continue to see this heirloom Tiara worn for years to come!
