Royal Guests and Relatives from around the globe joined the British Royal Family to celebrate the Wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton in Westminster Abbey on this day in 2011, 15 years ago, which was the ‘Wedding of the Century’!
Prince William arrived with his best man, Prince Harry, from Clarence House, while Catherine Middleton arrived at the Abbey with her father, Michael Middleton, from the Goring Hotel.
The Church of England Ceremony was officiated by the Archbishop of Canterbury, assisted by the Dean of Westminster and the Bishop of London. Afterwards, the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge signed of the register and then walked down the aisle, pausing briefly to bow and curtsey to the Queen.
After the ceremony, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, followed by the Bridal Party, rode in a Carriage Procession through London, in the 1902 State Landau, to Buckingham Palace.
The Queen held a lunchtime wedding reception for 650 guests at Buckingham Palace, following the Official Photoshoot, and later the new Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their families appeared on the balcony of Buckingham Palace, where the couple kissed for the crowds.
Later, the Duke and Duchess drove in the Prince of Wales’ Aston Martin to Clarence House, before attending the evening reception hosted by Prince of Wales at Buckingham Palace.
The new Duchess of Cambridge wore a Sarah Burton by Alexander McQueen gown of satin that featured an overlaid lace bodice and appliquéd skirt, with the Cartier Halo Scroll Tiara and her Wedding Earrings, a gift from her parents. Prince William wore the Irish Guards mounted officer’s uniform in Guard of Honour Order with a forage cap, with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Garter.
Miss Middleton’s wedding dress was designed by Sarah Burton at Alexander McQueen. The lace appliqué for the bodice and skirt was hand-made by the Royal School of Needlework, based at Hampton Court Palace.
Individual flowers were hand-cut from lace and hand-engineered onto ivory silk tulle to create a design which incorporates the rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock.
Miss Middleton wore a Cartier ‘halo’ tiara, lent by The Queen. The ‘halo’ tiara was made by Cartier in 1936 and presented to Princess Elizabeth (now The Queen) by her mother on the occasion of her 18th birthday.
