Happy Birthday to Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Luxembourg! The daughter of Cuban aristocrats, José Antonio Mestre y Álvarez and María Teresa Batista y Falla de Mestre, María Teresa Mestre y Batista was born in Cuba, and was educated in New York City and at the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies in Geneva where she met and then married then Hereditary Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg on Valentine’s Day in 1981. The couple have five children, four sons and a daughter, and five grandchildren. Grand Duke Henri succeeded to the Throne after his father, Grand Duke Jean, abdicated in 2000. On top of her official duties as the Consort of the world’s only Grand Duchy, Grand Duchess Maria Theresa is a Special Ambassador for UNESCO, an Eminent Advocate for Children with UNICEF, and the President of the Luxembourg Red Cross.
