The Jewels of Princess Ingeborg of Sweden

Today marks the 145th Anniversary of the Birth of Princess Ingeborg of Sweden and Denmark, who was born on this day in 1878! The Danish Princess who married a Swedish Prince, becoming the mother of Queen Astrid of BelgiumCrown Princess Martha of Norway, and Princess Margaretha of Denmark and the grandmother and great-grandmother of King Baudouin of BelgiumKing Harald V of Norway, Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte of LuxembourgKing Philippe of Belgium, and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, Princess Ingeborg possessed one of the most spectacular Jewellery collections, which we are featuring today!

Emerald Parure 

Origin: Around 1806, likely a gift from Emperor Napoleon to Princess Augusta, Duchess of Leuchtenberg. Given to Empress Amelie of Brazil in 1831, it was inherited by her sister, Queen Josefina of Sweden and Norway, and then by her daughter-in-law, Queen Sofia, who left it to her daughter-in-law, Princess Ingeborg, in 1913.

Current Location: Given to her daughter, Crown Princess Märtha of Norway, during the Second World War and now worn by Queen Sonja of Norway.

Boucheron Pearl Circle Tiara 

Origin: Bought by Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1900 and given to Princess Ingeborg

Notable Appearances: The Dutch State Visit to Sweden in 1946, the Danish State Banquet at the Royal Palace of Stockholm in 1947, King Gustav V’s 90th Birthday in 1948, King Haakon’s 80th Birthday in 1952, and King Harald’s 21st Birthday in 1957

Current Location: The Tiara was inherited by her granddaughter, Princess Ragnhild of Norway, and has recently been given to Princess Ingrid Alexandra of Norway.

Turquoise Star Tiara 

Origin: A wedding gift to Princess Ingeborg from her cousin, Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, in 1897

Notable Appearances: Official Portraits in 1900s, King Gustaf V’s 80th Birthday in 1938, and Official Portraits in 1930s

Current Location: The Tiara was inherited by her daughter, Princess Margaretha of Sweden and Denmark, then by her daughter-in-law, Countess Ruth of Rosenborg, and now belongs to Countess Jutta of Rosenborg.

Gold Bandeau Tiara 

Origin: The Tiara originates from Princess Pauline of Württemberg, Duchess of Nassau, and was inherited by her daughter, Queen Sofia of Sweden, and who left the Tiara to her daughter-in-law, Princess Ingeborg, in 1913.

Notable Appearances: Dinner at the Belgian Embassy in Stockholm in 1935

Current Location: Given to her granddaughter, Princess Astrid of Norway, in the 1950s who continues to wear it to this day.

Diamond Tiara

Origin: There were two identical Tiaras, one of Diamonds and the other a replica, of an unknown origin, which appeared in the late 1940s.

Notable Appearances: The Wedding of Princess Ragnhild of Norway in 1953 and the Nobel Prize Ceremony in 1953

Current Location: One and later both of the Tiaras were given to Countess Ruth of Rosenborg by the early 1950s and likely remain with her children.

Pearl Brooch

Origin: A wedding gift to Princess Ingeborg when she married Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland in 1897

Notable Appearances: King Harald’s 21st Birthday in 1957

Current Location: Inherited by her granddaughter, Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte of Luxembourg, and now worn by Grand Duchess Maria Teresa.

Emerald Brooches

Origin: Unknown origin, but likely composite of the Emerald Parure 

Notable Appearances:  Wedding of Crown Prince Leopold of Belgium and Princess Astrid of Sweden in 1926 and  King Christian X’s Silver Jubilee in 1937

Current Location: Each of the Three Brooches were inherited by her three Belgian Grandchildren: King Baudouin of Belgium, Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte of Luxembourg, and King Albert II of Belgium
