Dutch State Visits to Sweden

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands will begin their State Visit to Sweden tomorrow where they will be hosted by the Swedish Royal Family. We covered two Dutch State Visits to Sweden earlier this year in anticipation, and are rounding up all previous State Visits between the two Kingdoms today!

Dutch State Visit to Sweden in 1946

In 1946, King Gustaf V hosted the then Crown Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of The Netherlands on their first State Visit to Sweden, the only images of which come from the Banquet hosted by the King in honour of the Crown Princess (wearing the Aquamarine Tiara) and Prince, which was also attended by Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf, Crown Princess Louise (in the Baden Fringe Tiara and Napoleonic Amethyst Parure), and Prince Gustaf Adolf, Duke of Västerbotten.

Dutch State Visit to Sweden in 1957

Following their own State Visit to The Netherlands in 1954, King Gustaf VI Adolf and Queen Louise hosted Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard on their State Visit to Sweden in 1957, with the State Banquet hosted by the Swedish King and Queen (wearing Queen Sofia’s 9-Prong Tiara) in honour of Queen Juliana (in the Dutch Sapphire Tiara) and Prince Bernhard at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, which was also attended by Princess Sibylla (wearing the Connaught Diamond Tiara), Princess Margaretha, Princess Brigitta, and Princess Desiree, followed by an appearance on the Palace Balcony.

There was also a Gala Performance at which Queen Juliana (wearing the Dutch Mellerio Ruby Parure) and Prince Bernhard were joined by King Gustaf VI Adolf and Queen Louise (in the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Tiara) as well as Princess Sibylla (wearing the Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara), Princess Margaretha (in the Diamond Tiara) and Princess Desiree and there was also a Return Dinner hosted by the Queen (wearing the Aquamarine Tiara) and Prince in honour of the Swedish King and Queen, Princess Sibylla (in the Swedish Cameo Parure), Princess Margaretha (wearing the Diamond Tiara), Princess Brigitta, and Princess Desiree.

Swedish State Visit to The Netherlands in 1976

The Dutch Royal Family welcomed newlyweds King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden on their State Visit to The Netherlands in 1976, with the State Banquet hosted by Queen Juliana (wearing the Mellerio Ruby Tiara and Parure with the Order of the Seraphim) and Prince Bernhard (in the Order of the Seraphim) in honour of the King (in the Order of the Netherlands Lion) and Queen Silvia (wearing the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Parure and the Order of the Netherlands Lion) at the ROyal Palace of Amsterdam. Crown Princess Beatrix (wearing Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara and the Order of the Seraphim) and Prince Claus (in the Order of the Polar Star), Princess Margriet (wearing the Dutch Laurel Wreath Tiara and the Order of the Polar Star) and Pieter van Vollenhoven,  were also present.

There was also a Return Banquet hosted by King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia (wearing Queen Sofia’s 9-Prong Tiara and the Bernadotte Emerald Parure) in honour of Queen Juliana (in the Dutch Emerald Tiara) and Prince Bernhard at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Dutch State Visit to Sweden in 1987

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden hosted Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus of The Netherlands on their spectacular State Visit to Sweden in 1987, exactly 30 years after the State Visit of her parents, with the State Banquet hosted by the Swedish King and Queen (in the Braganza Tiara) in honour of Queen Beatrix (wearing the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara) and Prince Claus at the Royal Palace of Stockholm.

There was also a Return Gala hosted by the Queen and Prince in honour of the Swedish King and Queen (wearing the King Edward VII Ruby Necklace), Prince Bertil, and Princess Lilian (in Crown Princess Margareta’s Egyptian Necklace).

Swedish State Visit to The Netherlands in 2009

Queen Beatrix (wearing the Mellerio Ruby Tiara) was joined by the Prince of Orange, Princess Máxima (wearing the Antique Pearl Tiara) and Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven as she hosted a State Banquet for King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden (wearing the Leuchtenberg Sapphire Tiara and Parure) at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague on the first evening of their State Visit to The Netherlands in 2009.

The following evening, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia (in Queen Sofia’s 9-Prong Tiara and the Swedish Processional Necklace) hosted a Gala Concert at the De Witte Societeit in The Hague for Queen Beatrix (wearing Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara), the Prince of Orange, Princess Máxima (wearing the Ruby Peacock Tiara), Princess Margriet (in the Aquamarine Tiara) and Professor Pieter van Vollenhoven.

Swedish Official Visit to The Netherlands in 2014

In 2014, King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia visited the Netherlands on an Official Visit to mark the 400th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations, for which King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima (wearing the Dutch Diamond Bandeau) hosted a Banquet in honour of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia (in the Connaught Diamond Tiara) at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam at which Princess Beatrix (wearing Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara) was also present.
