Ogilvy Tiara

Princess Alexandra of Kent, Lady Ogilvy, 50th in line to the throne, is one of my favorite members of the British Royal family. The cousin of HM the Queen, with her graceful presence has been a major support for the Queen, before and after her marriage, and is thought to be one of the Queen’s confidantes.

Born on Christmas 1936, HRH lost her father the Prince George, Duke of Kent in 1942, during WWII. Her mother, Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent was the only war widow who had to pay death duties on her late husband’s estate. During the 1950s and 1950s, Princess Alexandra represented her cousin, the Queen, on many occasions, on tours of Australia and Hong Kong, and even granted independence to Nigeria in 1960.

Before she married the Hon. Angus Ogilvy, son of the Earl of Airlie, in 1963, Princess Alexandra wore many of her mother’s tiara, during the course of her official duties. She wore the Kent Festoon Tiara in Nigeria, the Circles Tiara, the crochet bandeau, and a set of diamond flowers on many occasions. For her wedding, HRH wore her mother’s City of London Fringe Tiara.

After her wedding, Princess Alexandra only wore one tiara. The Ogilvy Tiara was made by Collingwood jewellers in 1963, from the set of diamond flowers previously worn by the Princess. The flowers were incorporated into a swirling diamond ribbon structure .The Tiara, along with an accompanying necklace ( a copy of Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Necklace), was the wedding gift of Angus Ogilvy to his bride.

The Tiara is very versatile, it includes pearl, sapphire and turquoise center options, which transform the piece. Princess Alexandra wears the pearl option the most, often with her wedding necklace. The sapphire and turquoise options also have accompanying necklaces.

The couple had two children, and the Princess continued her official duties. Angus was knighted in 1988, becoming Sir Angus Ogilvy. After being widowed in 2004, Princess Alexandra remains one of the busiest members of the Royal family. She attends many official events, including all the Garden parties held this year, and is a regular presence at State Banquets.
