Dutch State Visit to Britain, 1972

There hasn’t been an announcement of this fall’s incoming State Visit to Britain, but it is the wish of many (myself included) that it be a Dutch State Visit. To honour the wishes of my readers, I am taking a look at glittering events during Queen Juliana’s second State Visit to Britain, which ended on this day in 1972.

On the first evening, the Queen (in the Vladimir Tiara and the Order of the Netherlands Lion) and Duke of Edinburgh hosted a State Banquet in honour of Queen Juliana (wearing the Stuart Tiara and Parure) and Prince Bernhard at St George’s Hall, Windsor Castle. The Queen Mother (in the Greville Tiara) and Princess Anne (wearing the Halo Scroll Tiara and her Modern Diamond Necklace) were also present amongst a host of other members of the Royal Family.

Two days later, Queen Juliana (in the Dutch Sapphire Tiara) and Prince Bernhard hosted a Return Banquet at the Carpenter’s Hall in London for their British Royal Hosts, which was attended by the Queen (wearing Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara and the Order of the Netherlands Lion) and Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Mother (in the Greville Tiara), Princess Margaret (wearing the Lotus Flower Tiara) and Lord Snowdon, the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (in the Teck Turquoise Tiara), Princess Alexandra (wearing the Ogilvy Tiara) and Angus Ogilvy, Prince William, Prince Richard, and Prince Michael of Kent.

  1. Gosh, that was a state visit! Look at all the beautiful tiaras on display! I love the picture of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and Queen Juliana having a tête-à-tête. I think the caped blue dress she’s wearing for the return banquet has to be the best looking dress for Queen Juliana that I’ve ever seen. I don’t think she ever looked more elegant. Wearing the gorgeous blue sapphire tiara helps too. 🙂

I do hope that when the current king and queen of the Netherlands come for their state visit that Queen Maxima dusts off the Stuart tiara. What could be more appropriate, right?

      1. Ah, yes! That is the young and sassy Princess Juliana. Good choice too! And who do we need to see to make sure Queen Maxima busts out the mighty Stuart? 🙂
