Dutch State Visit to Britain, 1982

King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of The Netherlands’ much awaited State Visit to the United Kingdom is taring tomorrow, and we have been taking look at some of the previous Dutch State Visits to Britain, including Queen Juliana and Prince Bernhard’s State Visit in 1950, the The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh’s 1958 State Visit, and Queen Juliana’s 1972 State Visit to the United Kingdom. Today, we are taking a look at the last Dutch State Visit, made by Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus in the November of 1982.

Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus were welcomed by the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh and members of the British Royal Family, including the Prince and Princess of Wales (wearing her Spencer Choker and Collingwood Pearl Earrings), at Westminster Pier in London, ahead of a Carriage Procession through the streets of London.

In the evening, the Queen (in the Vladimir Tiara and the Order of the Netherlands Lion) and Duke (wearing the Order of the Netherlands Lion) hosted a glittering State banquet in honour of Queen Beatrix (in the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara, the Royal Victorian Order and the Royal Victorian Chain) and Prince Claus (wearing the Royal Victorian Order) at Buckingham Palace. The Prince (in the Order of Orange-Nassau) and Princess of Wales (wearing the Spencer TiaraSapphire Brooch, and the Order of the Crown), Princess Anne (wearing her Festoon Tiara and the Order of the House of Orange) and Mark Phillips, Princess Margaret (in the Poltimore Tiara and the Order of the Netherlands Lion), the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (wearing the Cartier India Tiara), Princess Alice, Duchess of Gloucester (in the Gloucester Honeysuckle Tiara), the Duke and Duchess of Kent (wearing the Kent Pearl and Diamond Fringe Tiara), Princess Alexandra (wearing the Ogilvy Tiara and the Order of the Crown) and Sir Angus Ogilvy, and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent (in the Kent Festoon Tiara) were among the members of the Royal Family in attendance.

Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus attended a series of events, including  an address of welcome by the Lord Mayor of the City of Westminster at St James’s Palace, a meeting with Prime Minsiter Margaret Thatcher at 10 Downing Street and a visit to the City of Peterborough.

On the second evening, Queen Beatrix (wearing the Dutch Sapphire Tiara, the Royal Victorian Order and the Royal Victorian Chain) and Prince Claus (in the Royal Victorian Order) were the guests of honour at a Banquet hosted by the Lord Mayor of London at the Guildhall, where Princess Alexandra (wearing the Ogilvy Tiara and the Order of the Crown) and Sir Angus Ogilvy represented the Queen.

On the final evening, Queen Beatrix (in Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara, the Royal Victorian Order, and the Royal Victorian Chain) and Prince Claus (wearing the Royal Victorian Order) hosted a Return Banquet at Hampton Court Palace, for members of the British Royal Family, including the Queen (in the Burmese Ruby Tiara and the Order of the Netherlands Lion) and Duke of Edinburgh (wearing the Order of the Netherlands Lion), Queen Mother (in the Oriental Circlet Tiara and the Order of the Netherlands Lion), Prince (in the Order of Orange-Nassau) and Princess of Wales (wearing Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot TiaraSapphire Brooch, and the Order of the Crown), Princess Margaret (in the Lotus Flower Tiara and the Order of the Netherlands Lion), the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester (in the Gloucester Honeysuckle Tiara), and the Duchess of Grafton (wearing the Grafton Tiara and the Order of Orange-Nassau).

  1. Wow! What a visit! If this visit is half as wonderful as this one, it’ll be a wonderful thing to see! My hope if the Queen Maxima will bring the Stuart tiara with the Stuart diamond in it. I know, it’s a tall order, but one can hope. 🙂
