Princess Charlotte of Croÿ, Baroness von Twickel

Sad news out of Germany! Princess Charlotte of Croÿ ,Baroness von Twickel has passed away at the age of 87. The mother of the Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg passed away on August 22nd in Aurach, near Kitzbühel (Austria).

Princess Charlotte was born in London in 1938, the daughter of Prince Alexander of Croÿ and Anne Elspeth Campbell. In 1965, Princess Charlotte married Kraft, 9th Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg (1935-2004), the son of Gottfried, 8th Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg and Princess Margarita of Greece and Denmark. The late Prince was a nephew of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and one of King Charles III’s paternal first cousins.

Prince Kraft’s home, Schloss Langenburg, suffered a great fire in 1963. The new Princess of Hohenlohe-Langenburg was “instrumental” in the castle’s renovation.

In May 1965, a month before her wedding to Prince Kraft, Charlotte, together with her fiancé, her future mother-in-law, Princess Margarita, sister-in-law, Princess Beatrix, and brothers-in-law Prince Georg Andreas, Prince Rupprecht, and Prince Albrecht, welcomed his uncle Prince Philip and aunt Queen Elizabeth II during their historic visit to Schloss Langenburg.

Charlotte and Kraft had three children: Princess Cecile, Philipp, 10th Prince of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, and Princess Xenia.

Her marriage to Kraft ended in divorce in 1990 and the Prince remarried in 1992 with Irma Pospesch. In 1993 she married for a second time to Baron Johann von Twickel (1940-2014). Johann (known as John) was previously married to Princess Victoria Benigna Biron von Curland, daughter of Karl, Prince Biron von Curland and Princess Herzeleide of Prussia (a granddaughter of Kaiser Wilhelm II and first cousin and bridesmaid of Queen Frederica of Greece).

An accomplished art historian, Charlotte was for many years a representative of Christie’s in Germany and later served on the board of the Hohenloher Kunstverein.

She is survived by her three children, five grandchildren, two stepsons, Nikolaus and Tassilo von Twickel and their families, her sister, Princess Emma, Countess Ferdinand Waldburg zu Wolfegg und Waldsee and brother, Prince Maximilian of Croÿ and their families. The Requiem Mass, followed by burial beside her second husband, will be held on September 1, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at the parish church of Aurach.

Our condolences to the Hohenlohe-Langeburg and von Twickel Families!
