Royal Guests and Relatives joined the extended Greek Royal Family for the Wedding of Crown Prince Paul of Greece and Princess Frederica of Hanover on this day in 1938 (85 years ago), following two Banquets at the Royal Palace of Athens, as well as a Gala Performance at the National Theatre in Athens held the previous evening.
The Greek Royal Family were led by King George II along with Queen Helen of Romania with Crown Prince (later King) Michael, Princess Irene, and Princess Katherine, as well as their niece, Princess Alexandra, later Queen Alexandra of Yugoslavia.
The Foreign Royals were headed by Prince Ernst August of Hanoverthe Duke of Brunswick and Princess Victoria Louise, Duchess of Brunswick, along with Princess Alexandra of Hanover, Grand Duchess of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, as well as Prince Knud and Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark, Princess Margaretha of Sweden and Denmark, and Princess Anne, Duchess of Aosta.
The uncles and aunts of the bride and groom included Prince George and Princess Marie of Greece, Prince Nicholas and Grand Duchess Elena Vladimirovna, Princess Nicholas of Greece, and Prince Christopher and Princess Françoise of Greece and Orléans. The Royal Cousins in attendance included Prince George, Duke of Kent and Princess Marina, Duchess of Kent, Prince Paul and Princess Olga of Yugoslavia, Prince Phillip of Greece, later the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Margarita of Hohenlohe-Langenburg, the Margrave and Princess Theodora, Margravine of Baden, Princess Sophie of Greece and Hesse, Princess Eugenie of Greece, and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia among hundreds of Royal and Noble Guests from around Europe.
The couple stood beneath traditional Greek Orthodox Wedding Crowns during the Ceremony, which were held by the groom’s supporters: his uncle, Prince George of Greece; his nephew, Crown Prince (later King) Michael of Romania; his cousins, Prince Phillip and Prince Peter of Greece and Grand Duke Dmitri Pavlovich of Russia; and Princess Frederica’s brothers. Princess Frederica was supported by four bridesmaids: her sister-in-law, Princess Katherine of Greece; her husband’s cousin, Princess Eugenie of Greece; and two of her cousins, Princess Cecilie and Princess Herzeleide of Prussia.
