Accession of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg, 2000

Grand Duke Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Theresa of Luxembourg acceded to the Throne after the abdication of Grand Duke Jean on this day in 2000. In honour of the accession anniversary, we are

The ceremonies started with the abdication of Grand Duke Jean, who signed the document at the Grand Ducal Palace.

Afterwards, Grand Duke Henri took the constitutional oath before the Chamber of Deputies. He also gave a speech.

Later, the new Grand Duke and Duchess waved to crowds from the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace.

The Grand Ducal Family also attended a Service of Thanks Giving at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Luxembourg.

Among the guests were King Albert and Queen Paola of Belgium (maternal uncle and aunt of grand Duke Henri) and Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands.

Grand Duke Henri wore Uniform with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau. Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore a long skirt and embroidered blouse with a diamond rosette necklace and earrings, and the Sash and Star of the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau.
