Queen Margrethe’s 60th Birthday, 2000

Happy Birthday to Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, who turns 79 today! The Danish Queen has hosted a variety of glittering celebrations to mark milestone birthdays in her family (including one scheduled for her sister, Princess Benedikte’s 75th Birthday later this month), and today we are taking a look at her lavish 60th Birthday Celebrations on this day in 2000.

Celebrations started with a Gala Performance of ‘The Kermesse in Bruges’ at the Royal Danish Theatre in honour of Queen Margrethe (wearing the Pearl Poiré Tiara and Order of the Elephant), also attended by Prince Henrik (in the Order of the Elephant), Queen Ingrid (wearing the Ruby Parure), Prince Joachim and Princess Alexandra (in the Alexandrine Drop Tiara), Queen Anne Marie (wearing the Emerald Parure Tiara), Prince Nikolaos, Princess Alexia (in her Diamond Tiara), Princess Benedikte (wearing the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara), Princess Alexandra (in the Baden Palmette Tiara), and Princess Nathalie (wearing Princess Benedikte’s Floral Tiara) among the extended Danish Royal Family. Royal Guests included King Carl XVI Gustaf (in the Order of the Elephant), Queen Silvia (wearing the Connaught Diamond Tiara and Swedish Pink Topaz Parure), Crown Princess Victoria (in her 18th Birthday Tiara and the Order of the Elephant), Prince Carl-Philip (wearing the Order of the Seraphim), Princess Madeleine, and Princess Christina (in her Tiara) of Sweden, King Harald (wearing the Order of the Elephant), Queen Sonja (in Queen Maud’s Pearl Tiara), Crown Princess Haakon (wearing the Order of the Elephant), and Princess Märtha Louise (in King Olav’s Gift Tiara) of Norway, the Duke of Edinburgh (wearing the Order of the Elephant), Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands (in the Antique Pearl Tiara), and Grand Duke Jean (wearing the Order of the Elephant) and Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte (in the Topaz Tiara) of Luxembourg.

The following morning, the Danish Royal Family waved to crowds from the Balcony of Amalienborg Palace, followed by a Service of Thanksgiving, a Carriage Procession through Copenhagen, and a Reception at the City Hall. Crown Prince Frederik was on a four-month mission in Greenland, and was thus absent for the entirety of celebrations.

In the evening, Queen Margrethe (wearing the Floral Aigrette Tiara) and Prince Henrik hosted a glittering Banquet at Christiansborg Palace, other attendees included Prince Joachim and Princess Alexandra (in the Alexandrine Drop Tiara), Queen Anne Marie (wearing the Ruby Parure Tiara), Prince Nikolaos, Princess Alexia (in her Diamond Tiara), Princess Benedikte (wearing the Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg Fringe Tiara), Princess Alexandra (in the Baden Palmette Tiara), and Princess Nathalie (wearing Princess Benedikte’s Floral Tiara) among the extended Danish Royal Family. The Royal Guests included King Carl XVI Gustaf, Queen Silvia (in Queen Sofia’s 9-Prong Tiara), Crown Princess Victoria (wearing the Four-Button Tiara), Prince Carl-Philip, Princess Madeleine, and Princess Christina of Sweden, King Harald, Queen Sonja (wearing Queen Josefina’s Diamond Tiara), Crown Princess Haakon, and Princess Märtha Louise (in King Olav’s Gift Tiara) of Norway, the Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands (wearing the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara), and Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte (in the Small Floral Tiara) of Luxembourg.
