Spanish State Visit to Norway, 2006

 Twenty-four years after their first State Visit to Norway in 1982, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia returned to Norway on this day in 2006, at the invitation of their cousins and friends, King Harald V and Queen Sonja of Norway. The Spanish Royal Family had visited Norway for King Harald and Queen Sonja’s Silver Anniversary in 1993, and the Norwegian Royal Couple had gone on a State Visit to Norway in 1995.

Norwegian State Visit to Britain, 1951

A month after hosting the King and Queen of Denmark on their State Visit, the British Royal Family hosted their uncle and great-uncle, King Haakon VII of Norway, on his State Visit to the United Kingdom, which began on this day in 1951, exactly 70 years ago. The British and Norwegian Royal Families are very closely related through King Haakon’s wife, the British-born Queen Maud, a sister of the Queen’s grandfather, King George V, and King Haakon spent his exile during the Second World War in the United Kingdom. The Queen and Duke’s State Visit to Norway in 1955 was the first outgoing State Visit of her Reign, followed by another in 1981, and one in 2001. They have hosted the Norwegian Royal Family in 19511959, 1962, 1988, 1994, and 2005. For King Haakon’s first State Visit to the United Kingdom in 1908, he was hosted by his parents-in-law, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra, at Windsor Castle.

Princess Anne in Norway, 1971

Following an Official Visit to the United States and a more personal visit to Kenya with the Prince of Wales, Princess Anne embarked on her first solo overseas trip when she began her five-day visit to Norway on this day in 1971.  The British and Norwegian Royal Families are very closely related through the British-born Queen Maud of Norway, a sister of the Queen’s grandfather, King George V. The Queen and Duke’s State Visit to Norway in 1955 was the first outgoing State Visit of her Reign, followed by another in 1981, and one in 2001. They hosted the Norwegian Royal Family in 1951, 1959, 1962, 1988, 1994, and 2005. The Royal Family have also frequently holidayed with the Norwegian Royal Family, most notably in 1969.

The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee

In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II will become the first British Monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, seventy years of service, having acceded to the throne on 6th February 1952 when Her Majesty was 25 years old. Throughout the year, the Queen and members of the Royal Family are traveling around the country and the Commonwealth to undertake a variety of engagements to mark this historic occasion culminating with the focal point of the Platinum Jubilee Weekend in June 2022, which is also the anniversary of the Queen’s Coronation.

Thank you to everyone who has been involved in convening communities, families, neighbours and friends to mark my Platinum Jubilee, in the United Kingdom and across the Commonwealth. I know that many happy memories will be created at these festive occasions.

I continue to be inspired by the goodwill shown to me, and hope that the coming days will provide an opportunity to reflect on all that has been achieved during the last seventy years, as we look to the future with confidence and enthusiasm.

Spanish State Visit to the United States, 1976

Between the 2nd and the 6th of June 1976, five years after visiting the United States as Prince and Princess of Spain, King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia returned to the country on a State Visit, this time as the reigning King and Queen. This is considered one of the most important and successful visits among the ones made throughout their 39 years of reign. It was essential for establishing King Juan Carlos’ international image and also to get a favourable position from the United States in helping the Spanish political transition. King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia made many more State Visits to the United States, most notably in 2000, while the State Visit of King Felipe and Queen Letizia last year was delayed due to the pandemic.

The British and Norwegian Royal Families are very closely related through the British-born Queen Maud of Norway, a sister of the Queen’s grandfather, King George V, and Queen and Duke’s State Visit to Norway in 1955 was the first outgoing State Visit of her Reign, followed by another in 1981, and this one in 2001, as well as hosted the Norwegian Royal Family in 1959, 1962, 1988, 1994, and 2005. The Royal Family have also frequently holidayed with the Norwegian Royal Family, most notably in 1969.
