Lesotho Diamond Fringe Tiara

Happy Birthday to Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho, who celebrates her 45th Birthday today! The hardworking Queen who is the first commoner to marry into the Royal Family of the small African nation, Queen ‘Masenate does not have many tiara ocassions, but today, we are taking the opportunity to feature the Lesotho Diamond Fringe Tiara!

The provenance of this piece is unknown, but Queen Mother ‘Mamohato Bereng Seeiso notably wore the Diamond Spike Tiara at the Wedding of her son, King Letsie III, and Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso in 2000.

The Diamond Spike Tiara is not the only Tiara of the Lesotho Royal Family, and Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso wore a lavish Crown as well as a smaller Tiara for her Wedding to King Letsie III in 2000.

Following the Queen Mother’s passing in 2003, Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso wore the Diamond Spike Tiara for King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand’s Diamond Jubilee Banquet in the Borommaratchasathit Maholan Hall of the Grand Palace in Bangkok in 2006.

We expected to see the Tiara again at Emperor Naruhito’s Enthronement Banquet in 2019, but Queen ‘Masenate did not wear a Tiara, and wore a different piece for a series of portraits in 2021. However, let’s hope we see the Diamond Spike Tiara worn again soon!

Featuring diamonds in a fringe design, this Tiara shares the motif of Tiaras in royal collections around the world, originally inspired by the Kokoshniks at the Russian Royal Court. Examples can be found in the British, Swedish, Danish, Thai, Monaco, Liechtenstein and the Greek Royal Collections. While the provenance of this piece is unknown, Queen Mother ‘Mamohato Bereng Seeiso notably wore the Diamond Fringe Tiara at the Wedding of her son, King Letsie III, and Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso in 2000.

In 2006, Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso wore the Diamond Fringe Tiara for King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand’s Diamond Jubilee Banquet in the Borommaratchasathit Maholan Hall of the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Princess Senate of Lesotho was photographed in a mysterious Diamond Tiara for a series of portraits taken to mark her 18th Birthday, and has worn another tiara for a school dance in 2019.

  1. The Lesotho Diamond Fringe tiara reminds me a little of Queen Adelaide’s Fringe tiara in the British Royal Collection. It is similar in its almost uniform lower profile and the fact that it’s almost a complete circle. It looks very excellent and hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy seeing the queen wearing it again soon. Happy Birthday to Queen ‘Masenate! I wish her joy!

  2. I Think Queen ‘Masenate Mohato Seeiso of Lesotho Is on the same level as Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, Diana, Princess of Wales, Princess Grace of Monaco, Queen Letizia of Spain, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Mary, Crown Princess of Denmark, Princess Paola of Belgium, Sophie, Countess of Wessex, Princess Charlene of Monaco, Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway, Queen Mathilde of Belgium, Queen Noor al-Hussain of Jordan, Princess Sofia of Sweden,
