Selangor Diamond Fringe Tiara

Happy Birthday to Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, the Tengku Permaisuri (Queen) of Selangor, who turns 50 today! The former News Presenter who is now the Queen of Malaysia’s largest and wealthiest Sultanate, to mark the day, we are featuring her most-worn Tiara, the splendid Selangor Diamond Fringe Tiara!

Born in Kuala Lumpur as the daughter of an army veteran, she was educated at the Convent Bukit Nanas Secondary School and worked as flight attendant for Malaysia Airlines before becoming a news anchor with Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) in 1996. An award winning news presenter, she won Best TV News Presenter award twice. From a previous marriage with an Etihad Airways Pilot, Mustapha Kamal Halim, she has two children. In 2016, she married Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, the Sultan of Selangor, Malaysia’s largest and wealthiest Sultanate, in a private ceremony, making her final appearance as a news presenter that evening before the marriage was announced, being made the Tengku Permaisuri of Selangor, the title given to consorts not of royal blood. In addition to her many public duties, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin is also involved with a variety of charitable causes, most notably involved with cats welfare and Radio Televisyen Malaysia. We wish HRH a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!

Also known as the Bertatah Berlian Tiara, this piece features graduated diamond fringes topped with large collet diamonds, and was created at some point in the 1960s. Inspired by the Kokoshniks at the Russian Royal Court, notable examples of Fringe Tiaras are found in the British, SwedishDanishThaiMonacoLiechtenstein, Lesotho and the Greek Royal Collections.

The Tiara originates from Tengku Ampuan Rahimah, the third wife and consort of Sultan Salahuddin of Selangor, who wore it for many ceremonial occasions like as the Ceremonial Royal Banquet, Royal Investitures, Decorations and Medals Ceremony, and other official royal functions until her death in 1993. While the Fringe Tiara was not seen on subsequent Consorts, in 2011, it was worn by Eliza Cornelia Jamalullail for her wedding to Tunku Muzafar Shah Tunku Jaa’far Laksamana.

However, after Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah married Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin in 2016, the Diamond Fringe Tiara was the first to be worn, for a Royal Title Proclamation Ceremony and for the Sultan’s Birthday Celebrations.

In 2017, the most notable appearance of the Selangor Diamond Fringe Tiara was when Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore it at the Sultan of Brunei’s Golden Jubilee Banquet at the Istana Nurul Iman.

In 2018, Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin wore the Diamond Fringe Tiara at the Sultan of Kedah’s Coronation Banquet at the Istana Anak Bukit in Alor Setar, arriving in Kedah while wearing the Tiara. The Fringe Tiara was also worn to the King of Malaysia’s Installation Banquet in 2019.

These days, the Diamond Fringe Tiara is most often worn by Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin in Official Portraits and at the annual Opening of the Selangor State Assembly. While she has worn the two other Selangor Tiaras, the Diamond Fringe continues to be a favourite. There is no doubt we will continue to see the Selangor Diamond Fringe Tiara for years to come!
