Queen Elizabeth II (wearing the Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara with Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee Necklace) and the Duke of Edinburgh chat with King Olav V of Norway following the King’s investiture as a Knight Companion of the Order of the Garter at Windsor Castle, England, on this day in 1959. King Olav V was the Queen’s first cousin once removed (through his grandparents and her great grandparents, King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra) and the Duke’s third cousin (through Queen Victoria and King Christin IX of Denmark.  The British and Norwegian Royal Families are very closely related through the British-born Queen Maud of Norway, a sister of the Queen’s grandfather, King George V, and Queen and Duke’s State Visit to Norway in 1955 was the first outgoing State Visit of her Reign, and they again visited Norway in 1981 and 2001, as well as hosted the Norwegian Royal Family in 1959, 1962, 1988, 1994, and 2005.
