Despite the rain and their delayed arrival into Dublin, Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace of Monaco (wearing her Gold Coffee Bean Suite) were greeted by a crowd of 10,000 as they landed Dublin on this day in 1961, where their first port of call was to see President Éamon de Valera and the First Lady at Áras an Uachtaráin. That evening, the President (wearing the Order of Saint-Charles) and First Lady hosted a State Banquet in honour of the Prince (in the Order of Saint-Charles) and Princess (wearing her small Diamond Tiara) at Dublin Castle.

The main reason for the Prince and Princess’ visit was to attend the International Festival of Music and Arts in Dublin, but they also went to County Mayo, the ancestral home of the Kelly Family, visiting the Shrine of Our Lady at Croepatrick, where they met some distant relative, as well as the Irish National Stud in Tully.

Prince Rainier and Princess Grace (again wearing her small Diamond Tiara) were also mobbed by a crowd of thousands as they attended a Banquet given by the Taoiseach (Prime Minister) Sean Lemass at the Gresham Hotel in Dublin. Prince Rainier and Princess Grace returned to Ireland for a private visit in 1963 and to attend the Bal des Petits Lits Blancs in 1965.

  1. Princess Grace was exactly like her name declared, a beautiful, graceful lady. She left us way too soon. Here she is in all her charm and beauty, visiting the land of his ancestors. The lovely but small diamond tiara that she chose to wear was perfect!
