Funeral of Lord Mountbatten, 1979

The Funeral of the 1st Earl Mountbatten of Burma at Westminster Abbey on this day in 1979, following a Procession through the streets of London. Lord Mountbatten, a great-grandson of Queen Victoria, uncle of the Duke of Edinburgh, and the last British Viceroy of India, was killed when an IRA bomb exploded in his fishing boat in Ireland. After the Funeral, the body was buried at Romsey Abbey, near the Family Seat of Broadlands.

Almost the entire British Royal Family, as well as members of several Foreign Royal Houses, including King Olav of Norway, King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, Queen Beatrix and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie of Greece, King Michael and Queen Anne of Romania, Grand Duke Jean and Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte of Luxembourg, Tsar Simeon of Bulgaria, Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco, King Umberto and ueen Marie Jose of Italy, Prince Franz Joseph and Princess Gina of Liechtenstein, and Prince Albert of Belgium, were in attendance.
