British Royals at Christmas 2016

Members of the British Royal family attended the annual Christmas Service at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk on December 25th. Most of the members of the family are staying with the Queen at Sandringham House for the Holidays. The Queen missed both the services since she is recovering from a heavy cold. Another absence was Zara Phillips, who recently suffered a miscarriage. The family attended the early morning service, which receives little media attention, and the pre-afternoon service, which is usually attended by all of the Queen’s guests. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince George, and Princess Charlotte attended a service at St Mark’s Church in Englefield, Berkshire, where they are spending Christmas with the Duchess’s family. Norwegian Royal Tiaras 2016

The Norwegian Royal ladies had a nice amount of Tiara appearances this year, starting with the official portraits released for King Harald’s Silver Jubilee in January, and continuing with a Gala dinner for the diplomatic corps in March, outgoing State Visits to Italy and Finland, a banquet during the Singapore State Visit, and a dinner for members of the Norwegian Parliament in October. Swedish Royal Tiaras 2016

Happy Birthday to Queen Silvia of Sweden, who turns 73 today. The Swedish Royal family had a Tiara filled year starting with a representation Dinner and fairy tale party in February. They hosted the world’s royalty at King Carl Gustav’s 70th Birthday celebrations though only Queen Silvia attended Chilean State Banquet. There were two tiaras during the Swedish State Visit to Germany, and four tiaras each night at the Nobel Prize Banquet and King’s Dinner for Nobel Laureates. This made for a grand total of eleven Tiaras worn eighteen times this year. There were more tiaras worn by the King’s sisters, but covering them would have made this list endless. Continue reading

Royal Tiaras 2016

As part of our Year in review series, we take a look at the the Royal Tiaras of 2016. With the grand 70th Birthday celebrations of King Carl XVI Gustav to the guests at the Albanian Royal Wedding in October, this year has been filled with Royal Tiaras. Here we will look at the Tiaras from each country. This is by no means a comprehensive list, as we haven’t covered Japan or exiled royal families, but it includes events we have covered on this blog. If you have more to add to this, feel free to contact us. As always, click on the highlighted words to get to the comprehensive post on the Tiara or event. Continue reading

Dutch Royal Tiaras 2016

It was a year of repeats for the Dutch Royal Family in 2016. They wore only five Tiaras from their enormous collection nine times throughout the the year. At King Carl Gustav’s 70th Birthday celebrations, Princess Beatrix wore one of the family ‘Big Guns’, it was a standard showing at the annual Gala Dinner for the Corps Diplomatique in May, and while Queen Maxima wore a tiara for only the second time during the Dutch State Visit to New Zealand in November, the Dutch Royal family were back in their standard tiaras during the Belgian State Visit to the Netherlands a few weeks later. Queen’s Christmas Lunch at Buckingham Palace

Members of the British Royal Family attended the Queen’s annual Christmas Lunch at Buckingham Palace on December 20th. This lunch is held for those royals who aren’t invited to spend Christmas with the Queen at Sandringham in Norfolk. Since this is a private event, we only get pictures of the royals arriving and departing. It was announced that the Queen would be stepping down as head from 25 organisations at the end of her 90th year. Other members of the Royal Family will take over her positions.

British Royal Tiaras 2016

2016 was quite a low key tiara year in Britain, compared to 2015, when their were six tiara appearances for the Queen, five tiara appearances for the Duchess of Cornwall, and two tiara appearances for the Duchess of Cambridge. This year the Queen and Duchess of Cornwall repeated their tiaras, which combined with the Spanish State visit in March being canceled and the Queen not making an outgoing summer State Visit, left many Royal Watchers disappointed by the lack of glitter. As always, click on the underlined words to get to the comprehensive post on the Tiara or event. Queen and the Prince of Wales

Clarence House on Twitter released a portrait of the Queen and the Prince of Wales on December 17th. It was released with the message; “As a year of 90th birthday celebrations draw to a close, we would like to share this special photo of The Prince and The Queen.” I predict this photo to have been taken at Windsor Castle before the 90th Birthday Parade on the last day of the Royal Windsor Horse Show in May.
