Princess Marie’s Diamond Earrings

Happy Birthday to Princess Marie of Liechtenstein, who turns 80 today! Born Countess Marie Aglaë Kinsky of Wchinitz and Tettau, she married into the illustrious Princely Family and has access to a variety of glittering jewels but has favoured these magnificent Diamond Jewels.

The exact origin of these antique Diamond Earrings composed of two large pear-shaped diamond drops suspended from a diamond bow is unknown but it is believed that they were acquired by Prince Hans Adam and Princess Marie around the same time as the Kinsky Tiara in the 1990s. They differ from Princess Gina’s Diamond Earrings which were inherited by Princess Nora.

Princess Marie first wore these Diamond Earrings with the Kinsky Tiara for thee Wedding Ball of her elder son, Hereditary Prince Alois of Liechtenstein, and Duchess Sophie in Bavaria at Schloss Nymphenburg in 1993.

Two years later, the Diamond Earrings were worn by Princess Marie for the Wedding Gala of Infanta Elena of Spain at the Palace of Orleans and Bourbon in Villamanrique de la Condesa in 1995.

Princess Marie also wore the Diamond Earrings for the Wedding Gala of Infanta Cristina of Spain at the Cena Palacio in Barcelona in 1997.

Hereditary Princess Sophie of Liechtenstein first wore the Diamond Earrings with the Kinsky Tiara for the Wedding Ball of her sister, Duchess Elisabeth in Bayern, and Daniel Terberger at at Schloss Nymphenburg in 2004.

Princess Marie wore the Diamond Earrings again for the Wedding Gala of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy in 2012.

Hereditary Princess Sophie also wore the Diamond Earrings with the Habsburg Fringe Tiara for Queen Beatrix’s Abdication Dinner in 2013 as well as for King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 70th Birthday Banquet in 2016.

In 2023, the Diamond Earrings were worn with the Kinsky Tiara by Hereditary Princess Sophie for the spectacular Banquet to celebrate the Wedding of Crown Prince Al Hussein and Princess Rajwa at the Al Husseiniya Palace in Amman.

Most recently, Princess Marie Caroline of Liechtenstein wore the Diamond Earrings with the Habsburg Fringe Tiara for her Wedding to Leopoldo Maduro Vollmer at Vaduz Cathedral in 2025.

Two large pear-shaped diamond drops suspended from a diamond bow, the Diamond Earrings are different to a pair of similar Diamond Earrings worn by Princess Marie’s mother-in-law, Princess Gina, meaning that they might possibly be Kinsky heirlooms, since they were notably worn with the Kinsky Tiara when it was acquired by the Princely Family in the 1990s. More recently Princess Marie wore the Diamond Earrings at Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume’s Pre-Wedding Gala in 2012.

These days, the Princely Family is represented by Princess Marie’s daughter-in-law, Hereditary Princess Sophie, who has worn the Diamond Earrings with the Kinsky Tiara and with the Hapsburg Fringe Tiara, notably at Queen Beatrix’s Abdication Dinner in 2013. There is no doubt we will continue to see the Diamond Earrings for years to come.
