The Duke of Edinburgh was particularly close to the Swedish Royal Family, as his aunt was Queen Louise of Sweden, who hosted a State Visit to Sweden in 1956, and he was the third cousin of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, notably meeting during the Swedish State Visit to Britain in 1975 and the British State Visit to Sweden in 1983. King Carl Gustaf said:
The Queen and I have received with great sadness the news of the passing of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
Prince Philip has been a good friend of our family for many years, a friendship we have greatly valued.
His contribution to his country is an example for all of us.
We extend our condolences to Her Majesty the Queen, the Royal Family and the people of Great Britain.
In a podcast, King Carl Gustaf has said:
It was a very emotional and beautiful funeral. Different, of course. I had wanted to visit and attend the funeral. We had already started making contact a year ago, and tried to get the opportunity for a visit. I was afraid this would happen. Now Prince Philip was almost 100 years old, which in itself is wonderful.
He was a wonderful person, warm and cordial. Very humorous and always had a certain funny touch in what he said. We were out sailing together, then of course tourists came and stood at the edge of the harbour and looked down at us. Then Prince Philip said: “Now I know what it feels like to be a butterfly in a museum.”
