Queen Anne Marie’s Aquamarine Pendant

Happy Birthday to Queen Anne Marie of Greece, who turns 72 today! The youngest daughter of King Frederik IX of Denmark and Princess Ingrid of Sweden, she married King Constantine II of Greece in 1964. Despite being exiled for more than five decades, as the sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, sister-in-law of Queen Sofia of Spain, cousin of King Carl XVI Gustaf of SwedenKing Harald V of Norway, and the Duke of Edinburgh, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie attend a plethora of glittering events, where she wears pieces from her historic jewel collection, including this heart-shaped Aquamarine Pendant!

This heart-shaped Aquamarine and Diamond Pendant originally belonged to Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden (born Princess Margaret of Connaught), who wore it with her Aquamarine Kokoshnik Tiara and left the Pendant to her only daughter, Queen Ingrid of Denmark, at the time of her tragic death.

In the 1960s, Queen Ingrid gave the Pendant to her youngest daughter, probably as a gift for her 16th or 17th Birthday. Princess Anne Marie wore the piece suspended from a small strand of pearls for an Official Portrait and events during a visit to Greece during her Engagement.

Queen Anne Marie continued to wear the Aquamarine Pendant after her marriage, most notably when she suspended it from Queen Alexandrine’s Sautoir Necklace (an inheritance from her paternal grandmother) for the . She also paired the pieces with a large square aquamarine brooch, which was a wedding gift from a Greek tycoon.

Queen Anne Marie also wore her grandmother’s Aquamarine Pendant during the family’s exile, most notably at her brother-in-law, King Juan Carlos’, Enthronement in 1975, King Constantine’s 50th Birthday in 1990, her brother-in-law, Prince Henrik’s 60th Birthday in 1994, and the Wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway in 2001, and while she rarely wears the piece, it is usually paired with the Khedive of Egypt Tiara, another inheritance from Crown Princess Margareta.

In recent years, King Constantine and Queen Anne Marie returned to Greece, where they now reside in a Villa in Porto Heli. Queen Anne Marie wore the Aquamarine Pendant for the Pre-Wedding Gala of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg, and was last seen in the piece, as a brooch, at Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace in May. I have no doubt we will continue to see it for years to come.
