Happy Birthday to Queen Anne Marie of Greece, who turns 76 today! The youngest daughter of King Frederik IX of Denmark and Princess Ingrid of Sweden, she married King Constantine II of Greece in 1964. Despite being exiled for more than five decades, as the sister of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark, sister-in-law of Queen Sofia of Spain, cousin of King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, King Harald V of Norway, and the Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Anne Marie attends a plethora of glittering events, where she wears pieces from her spectacular jewel collection, including this splendid Emerald Pendant!

Consisting of a pear-shaped cabochon emerald pendant surrounded by two rows of diamonds, the emerald of the pendant is likely one of Queen Olga’s Romanov Emeralds, as there were likely more than the seven emerald pendants currently in the Greek Emerald Parure.
Queen Frederica began wearing this Emerald Pendant in the early 1960s, for a portrait, when she suspended it from her Pearl and Diamond Necklace, for the French State Visit to Greece in 1963, when it was worn with the Greek Emerald Tiara, and for the Greek State Visit to Thailand, when it was suspended from her Diamond Bow Brooch. The most notable appearance came for the Greek Monarchy Centenary Gala at the Royal Palace of Athens in 1963.
Queen Frederica seems to have retained the Emerald Pendant when she gifted the Greek Emerald Parure as a wedding gift to Princess Anne Marie of Denmark when she married her son, King Constantine II of Greece, having worn it suspended from her diamond necklace for Princess Anne Marie’s arrival in Athens for the Wedding.
After Queen Frederica’s death in 1981, the Diamond Bow Brooch was inherited by her son, King Constantine, but not worn by Queen Anne-Marie until the Wedding Ball of her nephew, Prince Joachim of Denmark, at Fredensborg Palace in 1995, suspended from her portion of Queen Alexandrine’s Diamond Sautoir and paired with the Greek Emerald Tiara, Earrings and Corsage with three pendants. Lets hope we see this splendid Heirloom worn again soon!
