Consisting of a diamond solitaire topped with three small diamonds, the provenance of the earrings is unknown, but they seem to have been acquired by Queen Ingrid around the 1950s, including for the British State Visit to Denmark in 1957, on a visit to London in 1957, the Wedding of Princess Margaret in 1960, and the Danish State Visit to Thailand in 1962, mostly worn for daytime and cocktail events.

Queen Ingrid retained the Diamond Earrings after being widowed, wearing it with the Khedive of Egypt Tiara for numerous royal events, including Crown Prince Haakon’s Confirmation in 1988, the Norwegian State Visit to Denmark in 1991, being worn into the 1990s.

After Queen Ingrid’s death in 2000, the Diamond Earrings, and the Khedive of Egypt Tiara, were inherited by her younger daughter, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, who began wearing them not long afterwards, at the Wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway in 2001, and has continued to wear them for royal events afterwards, including the Queen’s 80th Birthday Dinner in 2006, King Carl XVI Gustaf’s 60th Birthday, the Wedding of Prince Joachim and Marie Cavallier in 2008, and the Prince of Wales’ 60th Birthday Dinner at Buckingham Palace in 2008.

Queen Ingrid’s Diamond Earrings were also worn by Queen Anne Marie for Prince William’s Pre-Wedding Dinner in 2011, the Wedding of Princess Nathalie of Sayn-Wittgenstein-Berleburg in 2011, Queen Margrethe’s Ruby Jubilee Gala in 2012, the Wedding Gala of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume of Luxembourg and Countess Stephanie de Lannoy in 2012, Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace in 2018, and more recently, for the Palæerne Danser at Amalienborg Palace earlier this year, on the anniversary of Queen Ingrid’s birth in March.

More recently, Queen Ingrid’s Diamond Earrings were worn by Queen Anne Marie’s elder daughter, Princess Alexia of Greece, for Queen Margrethe’s Golden Jubilee Gala at the Royal Theatre in Copenhagen in September (where I saw the Princess arrive). The earrings were paired with the Khedive of Egypt Tiara, worn  by Princess Alexia for the first time since her wedding, as well as  Queen Frederica’s Bow Brooch. There is no doubt these splendid heirlooms will continue to be worn for years to come!
