When Princess Margaret of Connaught, a granddaughter of Queen Victoria, married Prince Gustaf Adolf of Sweden in 1905, she received this striking Amethyst and Diamond Pendant as a Wedding Gift from the Duke and Duchess of Portland.

After Crown Princess Margaretas death, the Amethyst and Diamond Pendant was among the Jewels inherited by her only daughter, Queen Ingrid of Denmark, who was not pictured in the piece, but seems to have loaned it to her daughter, the future Queen Margrethe II, for the British State Visit to Denmark in 1957 and to Princess Benedikte for the Greek Monarchy Centenary Celebrations in 1963.

After Queen Ingrid’s death in 2000, the Amethyst Brooch was inherited by her younger daughter, Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, who notably wore the piece for Prince Henrik’s 70th Birthday Celebrations in 2004, along with Queen Ingrid’s Diamond Earrings.

A few years earlier, Crown Princess Margareta’s Amethyst Brooch was loaned to her elder daughter, Princess Alexia, for the Wedding of Crown Prince Haakon of Norway in 2001.

More recently, the Duke and Duchess of Portland’s Amethyst and Diamond Pendant was worn by Princess Theodora, along with the Antique Corsage Tiara for Crown Prince Frederik’s 50th Birthday Banquet in 2018. Lets hope we see this striking heirloom worn again soon!
