Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, the first cousin of Queen Elizabeth II, was photographed by the Press on his last days at the Institut Le Rosey, an exclusive boys’ school in Geneva, on this day in 1953, 70 years ago. Belgian National Day 2023

The Belgian Royal Family celebrated National Day 2023 with a series of events on July 20th and 21st. The day commemorates July 21st, 1831 in which Prince Leopold of Saxe-Cobourg-Gotha swore allegiance to the new Belgian constitution, thus becoming the first Head of State of an independent state of Belgium under a constitutional monarchy and parliament. The Austrian Archduchess, from the Habsburg-Teschen branch, who become the second wife of King Alfonso XII before serving as Spain’s Regent for 17 years after his premature death, ‘Doña Virtudes’ was known for her strong religious beliefs, austerity and staidness. While the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh were busy with their post-Coronation Tours around the United Kingdom, the Queen Mother and Princess Margaret were on a Tour of Rhodesia on this day in 1953, which was their first foreign visit following the death of King George VI. The Rhodesia visit has originally been planned for the then Princess Elizabeth but had to be cancelled following the King’s sudden death the previous year and her accession to the Throne.
