King Charles III, Head of the Commonwealth, and Queen Camilla are presiding over the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at The Hydro Arena in Glasgow on July 23rd.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla emerged from a life-sized Doctor Who TARDIS as they arrived at the Opening Ceremony of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games at The Hydro Arena in Glasgow.
The entrance echoed Queen Elizabeth Il’s famous 2012 Olympic sketch with James Bond. A pre-recorded video showed the iconic blue police box-piloted by cycling legend Sir Chris Hoy and actor Greg McHugh-sweeping past Scottish landmarks like Loch Ness and Edinburgh Castle before “materializing” on an onstage garden. Upon exiting, the royal couple was playfully greeted by a quartet of former Scottish Doctor Who actors: Sylvester McCoy, David Tenant, Peter Capaldi, and Ncuti Gatwa.
As Head of the Commonwealth, King Charles officially declared the XXIII Commonwealth Games open and read aloud a message he had originally placed inside the King’s Baton back in March 2025.
The Duke of Edinburgh is also present.
