The Queen of The Netherlands and the King and Queen of Belgium joined the Grand Ducal Family to mark the Accession of Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg on this day in 2000, 25 years ago, upon the Abdication of Grand Duke Jean! The Grand Duke has abdicated last week.
The Ceremonies began with the abdication of Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg at the Grand Ducal Palace.
Afterwards, the Grand Ducal Family and Royal Guests joined Grand Duke Henri as he took the constitutional oath before the Chamber of Deputies.
Later, the new Grand Duke and Grand Duchess waved to crowds from the balcony of the Grand Ducal Palace, joined by members of the Grand Ducal Family and Royal Guests.
Queen Beatrix of The Netherlands and King Albert II and Queen Paola of Belgium joined the Grand Ducal Family.
Grand Duke Henri wore Uniform with the Sash and Star of the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau. Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore a Diamond Rosette Necklace and Earrings, and the Sash and Star of the Order of the Gold Lion of the House of Nassau.
The Grand Ducal Family also attended a Service of Thanksgiving at the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Luxembourg.
Several months later, Royal Heirs from around Europe joined the Grand Ducal Family for a Dinner and Gala Performance at the Grand Ducal Palace to celebrate the Enthronement of Grand Duke Henri in April 2001.
Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg abdicated last week in the Salle des Fêtes at Palais Grand-Ducal in Luxembourg, after a Reign of 25 years. The Grand Duke has been succeed by his eldest son, Grand Duke Guillaume V.
