State Opening of Parliament 2021

The Queen, accompanied by the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, presided over the Official Opening of the Session of Parliament in the Chamber of the House of Lords at the Palace of Westminster in London on May 11th. This was a ‘dressed down’ version of the State Opening, devoid of pageantry and ceremony, due to the ongoing Pandemic. The last State Opening was also a ‘dressed down’ affair in 2019, coming two months after the previous State Opening. Danish State Visit to Britain, 1951

The British Royal Family hosted King Frederik IX and Queen Ingrid of Denmark on their State Visit to Britain on thus day in 1951, the first Danish State Visit to Britain since 1914. The Danish and British Royal Families have close family links through their common descent from King Christian IX, as well as through Queen Ingrid’s mother, the British Princess Margaret of Connaught, and the Duke of Edinburgh, born a Prince of Greece and Denmark. The Queen has undertaken State Visits to Denmark in 1957 and in 1979, and has hosted Queen Margrethe on her State Visit to Britain in 1974 and on her second State Visit in 2000.

British State Visit to Norway, 1981

The Norwegian Royal Family host the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh on their glittering State Visit to Norway on this day in 1981, the second of the three State Visits to Norway during the Queen’s Reign. The British and Norwegian Royal Families are very closely related through the British-born Queen Maud of Norway, a sister of the Queen’s grandfather, King George V, and Queen and Duke’s State Visit to Norway in 1955 was the first outgoing State Visit of her Reign, and following this one in 1981, they again visited Norway in 2001, as well as hosted the Norwegian Royal Family in 1959, 1962, 1988, 1994, and 2005. Empress Eugenie’s Andean Emerald Cross

Today marks the 195th of the Birth of Empress Eugénie of France, who was born on this day in 1826! Doña María Eugenia de Palafox y Kirkpatrick, Countess of Teba and Marchioness of Ardales, popularly known as Eugenia de Montijo, became the Empress of the French after her marriage to Napoleon III, in 1853. The daughter of the Count of Monitjo, the sister of the Duchess of Alba, and the godmother of Queen Victoria Eugenia of Spain, who married the head of the Bonaparte family, Empress Eugénie lived a very long life dying at age 96, in Madrid. To mark the anniversary, we are featuring her marvellous Andean Emerald Cross, a 45 carat emerald cross that traveled through the French, British and Spanish Royal Collections, in an article written by assistant editor, David Rato, who runs the Spanish Royal Jewels account on Instagram!
