The Norwegian Royal Family celebrated the solemn Consecration of King Harald V of Norway at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim on this day in 1991, 35 years ago, a few months after his Accession to the Throne upon the death of his father, King Olav V.
King Harald V of Norway was consecrated by the Bishop of Nidaros at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The service followed the example of the previous Consecration, which replaced the lavish coronation with a simpler service that used to be a part of the coronation rituals.
The Bishop of Nidaros read:
Consecrate King Harald V, strengthen and lead him in his work as King of Norway. Let his service to the people and the Church be a blessing,” he said, among other things.
Turning to the Queen, he said:
Let her work be in support of the king’s deed. Help her use abilities and forces for the joy and benefit of Norway’s country and people,”
Following the Service, there was a Parade and a Procession through the streets of Trondheim to the Stiftsgården, where a Reception was held.
