Duke of Edinburgh’s Anniversary Bracelet

Today marks the 105th Anniversary of the Birth of Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburgh, who was born on this day in 192! The late Duke designed this striking Gold Bracelet as a gift to the Queen on their Fifth Wedding Anniversary, which is currently displayed at Buckingham Palace.

To celebrate their 5th Wedding Anniversary in 1952, the Duke of Edinburgh designed this striking Gold Bracelet set with Diamonds, Rubies and Sapphires created by the French jewelry house Boucheron

The bracelet includes a reference to Prince Philip’s naval badge, which is a touching nod to the Duke’s former career in the Royal Navy, which he gave up in order to support his wife full-time.

Set in diamonds, the naval badge is surrounded by two sapphire crosses that are likely to represent the Greek flag.

A ruby cross – likely to represent the flag of England – is flanked by two roses of York that symbolize the late monarch’s roots as Princess Elizabeth of York.

The symbols are all connected by gold links in the shape of interlocking E’s and P’s, standing for the couple’s initials.

While it was not a lifelong favourite like her Wedding Gift Bracelet, the Queen wore the Fifth Anniversary Bracelet on several occasions from the 1950s onwards.

Probably the most notable appearance of the Fifth Anniversary Bracelet was in 2007, when it was worn by the Queen for a Dinner held at Clarence House celebrating the couple’s 60th Wedding Anniversary.

In 2008, the Queen wore the Anniversary Bracelet for the Service of the Order of St Michael and St George at St Paul’s Cathedral.

Currently, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Anniversary Bracelet is among the Jewels of the late Queen on display in the ‘Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style’ Exhibition in the King’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace, which runs until next April!
