Happy Birthday to Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, who turns 70 tomorrow! The former consort of the Sovereign of the world’s only Grand Duchy, the Grand Duchess had one of the most magnificent jewellery collections in her possession, which included the Luxembourg Amethyst Tiara!
A striking Necklace of faceted Amethysts set within two rows of Diamonds, alongside a pair of Amethyst and Diamond Earrings and an Amethyst and Diamond Bracelet which has been set as a Tiara. The exact origin of the Parure is unknown and it may be an old Grand Ducal Heirloom or could have been acquired by Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte.
The Amethyst Necklace and Earrings were worn by Grand Duchess Joséphine Charlotte for the Wedding Gala of Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands in 1966.
In 1976, the Amethyst Bandeau Tiara was worn by Princess Margaretha for the Return Gala during the British State Visit to Luxembourg.
The following year, the Amethyst Bandeau Tiara was worn by her sister, Princess Marie Astrid, for a Gala in 1977.
In 1983, the Amethyst Tiara and Necklace were worn by Hereditary Grand Duchess Maria Teresa for a series of Official Portraits at the Palais Grand Ducal.
Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore the Amethyst Necklace with Tiara created from another Amethyst Bracelet for the National Day Gala in 2005.
Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie first debuted the Amethyst Tiara at the National Day Gala at the Palais Grand Ducal in 2014.
Later that same year, Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Amethyst Tiara and Necklace again for the German State Visit to Luxembourg.
The following year, the Amethyst Tiara and Necklace were worn by Princess Tessa for the National Day Gala.
Hereditary Grand Duchess Stéphanie wore the Amethyst Tiara again for the Luxembourg National Day at the Palais Grand Ducal in 2017.
Most recently, Grand Duchess Maria Teresa wore both Amethyst Tiaras as bracelets during the Luxembourg State Visit to Portugal in 2022, and there is no doubt we will continue to see it for years to come!
