Two Kings and Two Queens led the Royal Guests and Relatives at the Funeral of Princess Victoria Louise, Duchess of Brunswick at Brunswick Cathedral on this day in 1980, 45 years ago, before the burial in the Berggarten Mausoleum in Hanover.
The Funeral of Princess Victoria Louise, Duchess of Brunswick was held at Brunswick Cathedral, before the burial in in front of the Royal Mausoleum (Welfenmausoleum) in the Berggarten at the Herrenhausen Gardens in Hanover.
Crowds thronged in and around Brunswick Cathedral, St. Blasius, to bid farewell on Thursday to the last “Kaiser’s daughter,” Duchess Victoria Louise of Brunswick-Lüneburg, who died on November 11. One chair—decorated with white roses and irises—remained empty. It had been the deceased’s ancestral seat.
“The Duchess wished for a joyful funeral service. That’s why we are singing ‘Praise the Lord,'” said Cathedral Preacher Armin Kraft, a close confidant of the 88-year-old until the very end.
The deceased herself had determined and stipulated all the details of the final event of her rich life. She also stipulated that the collection at the end of the service should be donated to the World Hunger Relief organization. The simple, dignified ceremony unfolded exactly as she had envisioned it
