Dutch Diamond Trellis Necklace

Today marks the Anniversary of the Death of Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, who passed away on this day in 1962! The young girl who became the first Dutch Regnant Queen and reigned for almost 60 years, becoming a symbol of the resistance during the Second World War, Queen Wilhelmina possessed the entirety of the spectacular collection of the Dutch Royal Family, and today we are featuring the Dutch Diamond Trellis Necklace!

When Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands married Duke Henry of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1901, her mother, Queen Emma, presented her daughter with this striking diamond trellis necklace, which contains one hundred individually set diamonds on three rows of knife-edged bars with the middle row containing the largest diamonds, which can be replaced by pearls or sapphires, and can be worn with pendants attached.

Queen Wilhelmina notably wore her wedding gift Diamond Trellis Necklace with the Württemberg Ornate Pearl Tiara for a series of portraits taken in the 1910s.

The Diamond Trellis Necklace was worn with a series of pendants at the time of the couple’s Silver Wedding Anniversary celebrations in 1926, with the Ears of Wheat Tiara.

Around the same time, Queen Wilhelmina wore the Diamond Trellis Necklace the Diamond Bandeau for a series of Official Portraits.

In 1952, Queen Juliana wore the Diamond Trellis Necklace as a Tiara with a Sapphire Necklace, and Queen Emma’s Sapphire Bow Brooch for the Netherlands-America Foundation Gala in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, during a visit to the United States.

The Diamond Trellis Necklace was worn with the Dutch Diamond Stars and Pearl and Diamond Stomacher for a Dinner during the Austrian State Visit in 1961.

The Diamond Trellis Necklace was often worn by Princess Irene, for a series of notable occasions, including the British State Visit to the Netherlands in 1958 and the Wedding Ball of King Baudouin and Doña Fabiola de Mora y Aragón at the Royal Palace of Brussles in 1960.

Queen Juliana’s sister-in-law, Princess Simone of Lippe-Biesterfeld, wore the Diamond Trellis Necklace with Queen Emma’s Diamond Tiara for the Wedding Ball of Princess Beatrix of The Netherlands in 1966.

In 1968, the Diamond Trellis Necklace, in its sapphire version, was worn by Princess Beatrix for a Gala Concert by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in Rotterdam.

Queen Juliana continued to wear the Diamond Trellis Necklace after her abdication, with notable occasions including a Return Dinner hosted by the King and Queen of Belgium in 1993.

Queen Máxima first wore the Diamond Trellis Necklace with the Diamond Star Tiara at the Wedding of Princess Märtha Louise of Norway in Trondheim in 2002, just a few months after her own wedding. A few years later, she wore the Necklace for the Prince of Wales’ 60th Birthday Dinner at Buckingham Palace in 2008.

Princess Margriet has worn the Diamond Trellis Necklace on numerous occasions, earlier wearing the piece as a Tiara, including for King Willem-Alexander’s 40th Birthday Dinner in 2007, and more recently with the Mellerio Diamond Tiara for the Peter Stuyvesant Ball in New York City in 2019.

In 2013, Princess Mabel paired the Diamond Trellis Necklace with the Mellerio Diamond Tiara for Queen Beatrix’s Abdication Dinner in Amsterdam.

Queen Máxima wore the Diamond Trellis Necklace for a Gala in 2014, as well as for a Dinner in Wittenberg during a visit to Germany in 2017, followed by an appearance at King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday Gala, and at Prinsjesdag in 2017.

After an appearance at the Enthronement of Emperor Naruhito of Japan in 2019, Queen Máxima more recently wore the Diamond Trellis Necklace with sapphires and the Sapphire Necklace Tiara for the Diplomatic Gala at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam in June.

Most recently, the Princess of Orange wore the Diamond Trellis Necklace with the Sapphire Necklace Tiara for Prince Christian of Denmark’s 18th Birthday Gala Dinner at Christiansborg Palace. There is no doubt this lovely heirloom will be worn for many years to come!
