King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday Gala

The Norwegian Government hosted a Gala at the Opera in Oslo for King Harald and Queen Sonja’s 80th Birthday on the evening of May 10th. Members of Foreign Royal Families were present. On May 9th, the King and Queen hosted a Banquet at the Royal Palace. The Norwegian Royal Family and their guests drove along Oslo’s Karl Johans Gate on their way to the Opera, where they were hosted by the Norwegian Government at a gala dinner. The Norwegian Prime Minister gave a speech, later the Royals will view fireworks. Members of the Swedish, Danish, Belgian, Dutch, Greek, British, Luxembourgish, and Spanish Royal Families were present. The Presidents and First Ladies of Finland and Iceland were also present.

King Harald wore Black Tie. Queen Sonja wore a pale blue gown (designed by the Queen and made by staff at the Norwegian Opera) with multi strands of pearls, pearl and diamond earrings, and a diamond flower in her hair.


Crown Prince Haakon wore a navy jacket and trousers with Black Tie. Crown Princess Mette-Marit wore a Marte Krogh navy lace gown with her red stone drop earrings (which were worn with pearls yesterday). Princess Astrid wore a pink gown with pearls.

The Countess of Wessex wore a new silver gown with statement earrings. Princess Martha Louise wore an Ingunn Birkeland gown with statement earrings.

Queen Margrethe wore a navy lace gown with Queen Alexandrine’s Sapphire Demi-Parure. Queen Anne Marie of Greece wore her floral gown with a large pearl necklace and bracelet and the earrings and pendent from the Greek Emerald Parure.

Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark wore Black Tie. Crown Princess Mary wore an Erdem gown with diamond chandelier earrings. Prince Joachim wore Black Tie. Princess Marie wore a Rikke Gudnitz gown with dangling earrings and a dark stone pendent.

Crown Prince Pavlos wore Black Tie. Crown Princess Marie Chantal wore a Valentino gown with her JAR earrings. Prince Nikolaos wore Black Tie. Princess Tatiana wore a nude and white gown with cluster earrings.

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden wore Black Tie. Queen Silvia wore a dark sequined gown with diamond floral earrings and a diamond riviere.

Crown Princess Victoria repeated an Acne gown with statement tassel earrings. Prince Daniel wore Black Tie. Prince Carl-Phillip wore Black Tie. Princess Sofia wore a tired white lace gown with statement earrings.

King Philippe of Belgium wore Black Tie. Queen Mathilde wore a navy sequined lace gown with her new diamond tassel earrings.

King Willem-Alexander wore Black Tie. Queen Máxima wore a modified version of the the blue and gold skirt by Claes Iversen as a gown with sapphire and diamond earrings, diamond trellis necklace with sapphires, large sapphire bow brooch, and a diamond bracelet. Princess Beatrix wore a purple gown with amethyst earrings and a diamond riviere. Princess Mabel wore a black net gown with statement earrings.

King Juan Carlos of Spain wore Black Tie. Queen Sofia wore a glittering gown with diamond earrings.

Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg wore Black Tie. Grand Duchess Maria Theresa wore a teal gown with emerald choker and emerald and diamond earrings. Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume wore Black Tie. Hereditary Grand Duchess Stephanie wore a teal gown with the earrings and necklace of the Luxembourg aquamarine parure.
