Queen Elizabeth II
Happy Birthday to Queen Elizabeth II, who turns 91 today! Born Princess Elizabeth to the then Duke of York and Lady Elizabeth Bows-Lyon, she was the first granddaughter of King George VI and Queen Mary. A younger sister, Princess Margaret, joined the nursery in 1930. In 1936, she became Heiress Presumptive after the Abdication of her uncle, Edward VIII, which led to her parents becoming King George VI and Queen Elizabeth of the United Kingdom. The Princesses spent WWII at Windsor Castle, and in 1947, Princess Elizabeth married Lt. Phillip Mountbatten, formerly Prince Phillip of Greece, at Westminster Abbey. The couple have four children, Prince Charles, Princess Anne, Prince Andrew, and Prince Edward, and will celebrate their 70th Anniversary this year. In 1952, she succeeded to the Throne upon the sudden death of her father, while she was on tour of Kenya. She was crowned at Westminster Abbey in June 1953, and is the Queen of Great Britain and the Commonwealth Countries as well at the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. The Queen is one of the most famous people in the world. She celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2002, Diamond Jubilee in 2012, and her Sapphire Jubilee earlier this year. In her own words, the Queen continues to “put on the good clothes, and bring out the good things” for foreign guests and State Visits, and represents the UK throughout the world. She is the oldest British Monarch, longest-serving British Monarch, and the oldest currently reigning Monarch. I wish Her Majesty a very Happy Birthday, and many Happy Returns!
