On October 19, 1976, Queen Elizabeth II traveled from Balmoral to Edinburgh to mark the 300th anniversary of the Royal Company of Archers, the ceremonial unit that has served as the sovereign’s bodyguard in Scotland since 1676. The day began with an inspection parade in the grounds of the Palace of Holyroodhouse, where the Queen received a reddendo, a symbolic ceremonial payment the company presents to the monarch, an honor she had first received at an earlier visit and was now given for a second time. That evening, the celebrations continued with the Tercentenary Ball in the Assembly Rooms, a white tie event that drew the Duke of Edinburgh, Princess Anne, and Princess Margaret to join the Queen. Prince Charles had planned to attend as well, making the trip from HMS Bronington, the coastal minehunter he commanded during his Royal Navy service, but by the time he reached Holyroodhouse he found himself unwell with the flu and had to miss the evening’s festivities. For the ball, the Queen coordinated her jewelry with the green tones of her Royal Stewart tartan sash, wearing the Girls of Great Britain and Ireland tiara, Queen Mary’s Lover’s Knot brooch, and pieces from the Delhi Durbar parure, a set of jewels originally assembled for the 1911 Durbar in India marking the coronation of King George V and Queen Mary as Emperor and Empress.
