Zaire State Banquet at Buckingham Palace, 1973

The Queen and British Royal Family hosted a spectacular State Banquet for President Mobutu and First Lady Marie-Antoinette Mobutu of Zaire at Buckingham Palace on this day in 1973, 50 years ago, during the Zaire State Visit to Britain.

The Queen wore Queen Alexandra’s Kokoshnik Tiara  with the King George VI Festoon Necklace and the Greville Diamond Chandelier Earrings.

Also at the Banquet were the Duke of Kent, Prince Michael of Kent, and Lord Mountbatten along with Princess Alexandra of Kent, wearing the Ogilvy Tiara and Pearl Corsage Brooch.

The Queen and Royal Family had welcomed President Mobutu and First Lady Marie-Antoinette Mobutu of Zaire at Victoria Station in London, before a Procession to Buckingham Palace.
