Funeral of King Umberto II of Italy, 1983

Royal Guests and Relatives gathered from around Europe to join the Savoy Royal Family for the Funeral of King Umberto II of Italy at Hautecombe Abbey in Savoie, France on this day in 1983, being buried in the traditional burial place of the House of Savoy for centuries. 

Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy, Prince of Naples led the mourners alongside Queen Marie José, the Princess of Naples, the Prince of Venice, Prince Amedeo of Savoy, Duke of Aosta, Princess Maria Pia, Princess Maria Gabriella, and Princess Maria Beatrice.

Foreign Royal Guests included King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain, King Constantine II of Greece, King Michael of Romania, Tsar Simeon II of Bulgaria, Prince Rainier III of Monaco, Archduke Otto von Habsburg, Hereditary Grand Duke Henri and Hereditary Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg, and Prince Edward, Duke of Kent alongside an estimated 12,000 mourners.

The Savoy Royal Family gathered at Hautecombe Abbey to attend a Memorial Service marking the 40th Anniversary of King Umberto’s death.
