Today marks the 40th Anniversary of the Death of Princess Grace of Monaco, who tragically passed away on this day in 1982! The famous Hollywood star who became the Monégasque consort, after marrying the sovereign Prince, Rainier III, the Princess has remained a style icon to this day, playing a role in transforming the Principality of Monaco into the glamorous place we know today. Since we have already featured Princess Grace’s Top Jewels, to mark the occasion, we are featuring Princess Grace’s Van Cleef & Arpels Tiara!

When Princess Grace loaned her Diamond Tiara to her elder daughter, Princess Caroline, for the Ball held at the Prince’s Palace in Monte Carlo ahead of her first wedding in 1978, she herself wore a Diamond Tiara composed of 144 diamonds, totalling 77.34 carats, on loan from Van Cleef & Arpels, which despite it being only once, has been termed ‘Princess Grace’s Van Cleef & Arpels Tiara’.
The Tiara remains in the Van Cleef & Arpels Collection and has been worn by other royals, including Princess Diane of Orléans, Duchess of Württemberg, for the Duke’s 50th Birthday in 1986, and Princess Constance of Bourbon-Parma, who wore the Tiara for a Van Cleef & Arpels Advertisement in 1991.
More recently, Princess Grace’s Van Cleef & Arpels Tiara was worn by Julia Roberts, who played Evil Queen Clementianna, as well as Lily Collins, who was playing Snow White, lending a sense of continuity, in the film ‘Mirror, Mirror’ (2012), which was shot in 2011.

However, the Tiara has more frequently been seen touring the world as part of Van Cleef & Arpels Exhibitions, and more often, Exhibitions on Princess Grace of Monaco, which have included many pieces from her own Jewellery Collection, continuing the link to Princess Grace. There is no doubt we will continue to see the Van Cleef & Arpels Tiara on screen and at exhibitions for years to come!
