Happy Birthday to Queen Tunku Azizah of Malaysia, the XVI Raja Permaisuri Agong and the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang! Born Princess Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah of Johor, she is the third daughter of Sultan Iskandar of Johor and ”Enche’ Besar” Hajah Kalsom binti Abdullah, making her a sister of the current Sultan of Johor. Educated at the Sekolah Perempuan Rendah Sultan Ibrahim and Sekolah Tun Fatimah in Johor Bahru, she got a degree in Political Science and Sociology from the National University of Singapore. In 1986, Tunku Azizah married Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, the Crown Prince of Pahang, becoming the Tengku Puan of Pahang as well as being a Paduka Putri Tunku of Johor. The couple have three sons and two daughters, as well as an adopted son and three daughters from the Sultan’s second marriage. An expert cook, the Queen traveled around Pahang to learn recipes and published ‘Air Tangan Tengku Puan Pahang Masakan Tradisional Pahang’, the proceeds of which go to the Tunku Azizah Fertility Foundation, and she has been known to personally cook for flood victims and the less fortunate. In January 2019, after the abdication of her father-in-law, she became the Tengku Ampuan of Pahang, soon after becoming the Raja Permaisuri Agong (Queen) of Malaysia, after her husband’s election to the world’s only rotational monarchy, for a 5-year term until 2024, being formally Installed earlier this week. I wish HM a very Happy Birthday and Many Happy Returns!
